1   VoiceXML Checker

The primary purpose of the VoiceXML Checker is to allow you to verify the syntactic correctness of your VoiceXML files. It also allows you to make changes to your files and resave them in your Café account directory.

You should use the VoiceXML Checker as the first step in debugging your applications. It allows you to catch syntactic errors before going on to look for any semantic errors. See Chapter  3, Trace Tool and Chapter  5, Vocal Debugger for descriptions of tools you can use to find semantic errors.

Note: To use the BeVocal tools, you must have the Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 1.5.7 installed on your computer.

You can click VoiceXML Checker in the Tools & File Management menu to start the checker. This brings up an empty Checker window.

You can use the edit box to create a new file and save it to your Café directory by giving it a name in the Save As box. More frequently, however, you'll edit files on a local machine and upload them to Café for storage. In this case, you'd typically use the edit box to correct mistakes found by the Checker.

Checking a File

To check an existing file that you've uploaded to your Café home directory,

1. Click Tools & File Management.

2. If your file has not yet been uploaded to your Café home directory, use the Upload File text box and the Upload button to load your file into your directory. It will appear in the list of VoiceXML files.
3. From the list of VoiceXML files, click the name of the file you want to check. The VoiceXML Checker appears with the source for the selected file in the edit box.

4. Click Check.
If no problems are detected, the Status area displays a message to that effect:

On the other hand, if problems are detected, the Status area displays a message to that effect and the area below the Checker Command Area displays a list of problems with hyperlinks to the problematic source lines. So if the Checker shows this:

You can click on the Line 46 to have the window scroll to include the following:

5. To correct your errors, you can either edit the source code directly in the VoiceXML Checker's edit box or you can edit the file off-line and use the File Management tool to upload the corrected file.
6. If you use the VoiceXML Checker's edit box, make changes in the edit box and click Check to see if you corrected the problems. Once you are satisfied, click Save to save your changes to your Café home directory.
7. If you make changes to your file and are unsatisfied with them, you can revert your file to the last version you saved by clicking Revert.

Creating a New File

You can also use the VoiceXML Checker to create a new file and save it to your home directory. To do so,

1. Bring up the VoiceXML Checker either with an existing file that you want to modify or with an empty edit box.
2. Make whatever changes you want for your new file.
3. In the Command Area, and her enter a name for your file and click Save As.

You can only save VoiceXML, JavaScript, text, and grammar files to your Café directory.
